Phoenix Players stages Ibsen Play

30/05/2006 // Phoenix Players in Nairobi will play a production of Henrik Ibsen’s A Doll’s House in May. As part of the Ibsen Year 2006, The Royal Norwegian Embassy is sponsoring the Phoenix Players, in commemoration of one of the greatest dramatists that have ever lived.

In A Doll’s House (1879), Nora wanted to help her husband regain his health by arranging a holiday in Italy, but to achieve this she had to forge a signature in order to borrow money. Because she is a woman, she does not have the right to take up a loan without a guarantor. When the fraud is exposed, Nora expects her husband to assume responsibility. But Helmer does not defend her when she really needs it and Nora sees her entire life in a new, critical light. It is not only abstract "society" that lets her down through its legislation but also the person who is closest to her. She has been played with and has never been taken seriously. Now she has to leave in order to find out what the empty phrases with which people surround themselves really mean. What is this miracle people talk about? She leaves her husband and children and goes out into the world alone.
