Norway supported workshop on World Heritage Conservation in Africa

From 4th to 6th May 2010 The National Museums of Kenya hosted a Norwegian funded conference in Nairobi on World Heritage Conservation. The Norwegian Ambassador Elisabeth Jacobsen opened the conference. Site managers and focal points from East-, Central and West African Anglophone Countries were invited with the purpose of capacity building, sharing of experiences and mutual learning.

On the 25th of January Norwegian artist Marianne Heske launched her art project “Tête à-tête” in the Gunpowder Tower at Fort Jesus, Mombasa. The Norwegian Ambassador to Kenya, Ms Elisabeth Jacobsen, spoke at the reception, which was held at Fort Jesus.

48 excited football players from Mathare Youth Sports Association - MYSA - left for Norway Cup last Friday, 17th of July. Before their departure to Norway, the Norwegian ambassador to Kenya, H.E. Elisabeth Jacobsen hosted a formal Send Off reception at the Norwegian Residence. The young football players were celebrated through an evening of music, dance and speeches. Sports Secretary, Professor Langat, from the Ministry of Youth and Sports Affairs was the guest of honour. In his speech the professor stated that the football players would be 'ambassadors for Kenya' when they are in Norway.

Norwegian cycling is currently enjoying an upswing. Interest in both competitive cycling and cycling for keeping fit has skyrocketed over the last four to five years, for young and old alike. Much of the credit for this can be attributed to big names in the sport such as Thor Hushovd, Gunn-Rita Dahle Flesjå and Kurt Asle Arvesen. But determined efforts are also being made to encourage children and young people to start cycling.

Fatma Issa Holm, a Kenya-born Norwegian paintartist, will exhibit her work for the first time in her home country in December this year. The art exhibition, portraying the Swahili culture, will be held on Lamu Museum 1 - 8 December, and on Fort Jesus 11 - 16 December.

Slum youth enlighten Africities dignitaries

Youth from the Nairobi slum of Mathare yesterday treated dignitaries attending the ongoing Africities Summit to an enlightening art and music show at the Alliance Francaise. The Mathare Youth Sports Association, supported by the Government of Norway and UN HABITAT's Partners and Youth Section, displayed photographs they took documenting their lives as slum dwellers. The exhibit will run until 30 September.
