Norwegian Funded Immigration Office in Puntland Opened

The Norwegian Ambassador to Somalia, Mr. Victor Rønneberg, inaugurated on 20 February 2017 a new Immigration Office in Garowe, for the Regional State of Puntland in Somalia

As part of a 3-year project, Norway has financed a new Immigration Building in Garowe, which will cover the whole of Puntland. Immigration is a federal responsibility in Somalia. However, the Federal Directorate of Immigration and Naturalization has regional offices in all federal states of Somalia. Puntland did not have a facility for Immigration to carry out their mandate, until the building in Garowe town was finalized in November 2016. The building was officially opened on 20 February 2017, in a ceremony with participants from both the Federal Government of Somalia, the State of Puntland, International Organization for Migration (IOM) and the Norwegian Embassy.

Both federal and local media covered the inauguration ceremony. The project was financed by Norway and implemented by IOM. The Immigration Office for Puntland is one of several outcomes in a project to support and enhance the institutional capacity of Departments of Migration in Mogadishu, Puntland and Somaliland.
