Norwegian Ambassador Observes Mass Voter Registration in Nairobi, Kisii and Migori Counties

The Norwegian Ambassador, Mr Victor Rønneberg, participated in observing IEBC’s mass voter registration exercise in Nairobi, Kisii and Migori Counties from 8 to 10 February. The observation is part of the international community’s support for the electoral process in Kenya.

The Norwegian Ambassador had useful meetings with the IEBC Regional Coordinators, as well as with County Governments and Commissioners. In the meetings, Mr Rønneberg emphasised the international community’s message about everyone contributing to free, fair, credible and peaceful elections. He urged all eligible citizens to exercise their democratic right by registering as voters and participating in the elections.

The Ambassador observed a number of voter registration centres and got a good impression of how the process was undertaken.

On bilateral issues, Mr Rønneberg emphasised in his meetings with County leaders the opportunities existing for business and investment, which has become the key priority for Norway in Kenya. Norwegian entities have already invested heavily in Kenya, including in major companies. Various sectors are being considered for further business opportunities.

‘Norway now sees Africa as a business and investment partner, and as such it is necessary to have strong structural frameworks that will both attract and enhance business partnerships for mutual benefit’, said Mr. Rønneberg. ‘I applaud and encourage youth employment efforts, like the one I witnessed at the Kisii Motorcycle Riders’ Cooperative, a youth employment initiative supported by the Kisii County Government’.

In turn, the County leaders reiterated their emphasis on development, peaceful co-existence and joint efforts to ensure a credible and inclusive election in their respective counties.
