Norway supports the Kenya National Commission on Human Rights

11/12/2009 // The Norwegian Embassy has decided to support the Kenya National Commission on Human Rights (KNHCR), with in all NOK 10 million (app. Ksh 120 million).

The goal of the support is defined by the vision of the Commission itself: “To increase respect for and greater enjoyment of fundamental human rights in Kenya”.

The purpose of the support is as follows:
a. Reduced systemic human rights violations
b. Increased application of human rights principles and standards in legal and governance reforms,
c. Increased knowledge and practice on human rights principles and standards in public and private spheres, and
d. Organizational Growth and Development

Norway is very pleased with this opportunity to support one of the most vibrant and progressive state-sponsored HR-bodies in Africa. Time and time again, the Commission has proved itself worthy of the image being built of an unafraid, brave and targeted human rights body, always with an eye of protecting the most vulnerable groups in Kenya.

The impact the KNCHR may have can not be underestimated, and will hopefully contribute to improving the governance and Human Rights situation in Kenya in the future.

The support will run for 2 years.
