Heads of Missions' Joint Statement on ICC and Special Tribunal

17/09/2009 // The Norwegian ambassador H.E. Elisabeth Jacobsen, together with Heads of Missions from Canada, Switzerland and the European Union, invited yesterday, 16th July 2009, to a press conference at Hilton Hotel. The rationale behind the statement was for the Heads of Missions to express their joint support for the formation of a local tribunal to try suspects orchestrating the 2007 post election violence.

H.E. Anna Brandt, Swedish ambassador to Kenya and chair of the EU Presidency, on behalf of the 25 countries that have signed the statement, urged the Kenyan Government to move forward quickly in establishing a local tribunal.

Canadian High Commissioner and co-chair of the Likeminded Group (LiMiD-P), H.E. Ross Hynes highlighted that “ICC is a court of last resort designed for countries that are unwilling or unable to take action themselves.”

H.E. Elisabeth Jacobsen said about the statement: "Kenya needs to take measures to end the culture of impunity. Setting up a local tribunal is a necessary step in this direction."
