Women and small arms

18/12/2009 // 18 December 2009 the Norwegian ambassador to Kenya, Elisabeth Jacobsen, spoke at the opening of the RECSA Gender Validation Workshop held in Nairobi.

Norway has for several years supported the Nairobi based organisation Regional Centre on Small Arms (RECSA). The organisation works to prevent, combat and eradicate stockpiling and illicit trafficking in small arms and light weapons in the Great Lakes Region and Horn of Africa.

The workshop put focus on the disproportional burden bestowed on women as a result of small arms violence.

The ambassador urged the participants to continue their work to improve human security while bearing in mind the gender aspect of this work. This will not only get lifesaving results for girls, women, boys and men who are threatened today, but also contribute to a better life for generations to come.
