The 9th Special Session of the Governing Council of the United Nations Environment

30/05/2006 // The 9th Special Session of the Governing Council of the United Nations Environment Programme/Global Ministerial Environment Forum was held in Dubai 7 th -9 th February. The meeting agreed on a new global initiative aimed at making chemicals safer for humans and the planet.

Norway in cooperation with UNEP held a special sideevent on sustainable tourism. The event used the Basecamp Masai Mara – the first establishment of six "Basecamps" within the Norwegian Basecamp Explorer Group – to illustrate a positive example.

It has recently been awarded the First Choice Responsible Tourism Award for 2005. The Award is regarded as one of the most prestigious international awards within its field.

The event was opened by the Norwegian Minister for the Environment Helen Bjørnøy, followed by the Minister of the Environment and Natural resources in Kenya Hon. Kivutha Kibwana and Executive Director of UNEP Dr. Klaus Töpfer.
