Family immigration

Last updated: 14/01/2012 // If a member of your family is living in Norway or you want to set up a family with a person living there, you can apply for a family immigration permit to come and live together with him or her there.

The person living in Norway must be one of the following categories:
• Norwegian or Nordic citizen
• A person holding a permanent residence permit
• A person holding a residence permit that forms the basis for a permanent residence permit

For information about which family members can be granted a family immigration permit, see the Norwegian Directorate of Immigration's webpage.

Applications
Note
: Applications can only be submitted to the Embassy on appointment, either by using the online application procedure or by calling the Embassy to make an appointment. Applicants are encouraged to use the online application procedure.

Applying online
Applicants are encouraged to use the Norwegian Application Portal. Applying online will result in shorter processing time, less queues at the embassy, as well as making it easier to re-apply for subsequent visas. By using this option it is also possible to check the status of the application online. Please note that it is also possible for the sponsor/family member in Norway to complete all or part of the online process for the applicant (e.g. log on, registration and payment of the fee).

It will still be possible to hand in paper applications. However, applicants using the Application Portal will be given priority. When required documents have been submitted to the Embassy, the application will be sent to the Directorate of Immigration (UDI) in Norway for processing. In some cases the applicant will be called for an interview at the Embassy before the application is sent to Norway.

Fee
A fee must be paid on the submission of the application. For current fees, see right hand sidebar. Application is free for children below 18 years.

Processing time
The Embassy will send the application to the Directorate of Immigration (UDI) within one week after having received the application, or having undertaken the interview when that is necessary. See sidebar for more information.
